JR – Grinder Max

Hi and welcome to another surfboard review from Rogers Surfari and Reviews. Today we are looking at something in more of the performance category. While JR states this can be surfed in everyday conditions I did find this board needed some juice to get going, it did not like sloppy wind swell. However this may have been due to the fact I was riding a board that was a little undersized for me.

The Grinder Max I had was a 6’2 x 19 ⅜ x 2 ½ coming in at 30.20L now I’m 100kg and have since moved my litreage sweet spot to between 38 – 45L depending on the style of board it is. In the future I would like to give one of these a go that suits me more as I think in the right conditions it has a lot to offer. It has a reasonably deep single concave giving lots of lift, a fair bit of tail rocker to help surf it nice and vertical in the pocket. Overall the board has what I would describe as a fairly full rocker, which as we know the more rocker a board has the more it push a wave needs to have to keep it moving well.

My first surf on the Grinder Max was at Dbah on the gold coast, it was 1-2ft day but the waves had good shape and a fair bit of punch. I was using FCS 2 performers in Large which I really think helped generate speed with its In side foil technology. The board felt loose yet did have good drive. It carried speed well despite the smaller waves, the rails did feel very sensitive which is great for those who like radical surfing.

I think with a bit more float I could find a place for this board in my quiver for those days where it was really firing. I can see it working well at places like Kirra in 3-4ft waves that were fairly hollow and punchy to nice lined up beachy that may not be exactly barreling but has some nice steep critical sections that allow you to really put this board through its paces.
