Slater Designs – Omni

Hi Surf Fans,

Welcome to another video and review from Rogers Surfaris and Reviews.

Today we have the Slater Designs – Omni. This thing is fast and rather easy to throw around. Mine is a 6’0 x 20 7/8 x 2 13/16 39.3L. I actually went to the high side of my normal litreage mainly cause I wanted this for when the waves got good and the extra glide is really noticeable when trying to get in early before pulling in for the barrel. I think depending on your skill level you can size these a little either side of your short board sweet spot as with any board Tomo has been involved in they are extremely efficient in the water and on a wave. This is mainly due to the concave he has put through the bottom, there is a large single running through the board with another single to double running from about half way down the board. Giving this board heaps of lift and speed.

To me this is a board however that needs a little bit of shape and power to the wave to really come alive while it will glide over flat spots on weak wind swells the tail is fairly sensitive and I find can be bogged down rather easily if you loose to much speed. In saying that we are in a Autumn months here in Australia which is giving us some consistent quality waves so I haven’t surfed it to much on those weaker onshore wind swell days.

With the nice little round tail as I mentioned I’ve found it easy to pull in barrels with just the right amount of stall then shift my weight forward and come flying out the end. This board is certainly not for beginners I think it will suit someone in the intermediate to advance range as it does take a bit to keep the board under control.

I’ve been mainly ridding it with FCS JW template or the Firewire FCS template both work really well. I find the Firewire template a bit better when the surf is larger as it helps control the speed and the smaller centre fin really helps with release through turns.

Overall this has become one of my go to boards it allows me to complete more radical turns with ease and make more barrels. It didn’t take me long to get used to having no real nose on it. If you have the skill level I think this board will fit in any ones quiver. It will handle 1-2ft days with some shape all the way to solid 5-6ft waves. I think even if the waves are little flat faced as long as they have some grunt it will come alive and be barrel of fun.

As always keep surfing.

  1. Hey dude love the reviews, I’m about the same size as you so good to hear your thoughts on how each size is working for you. Keep up the good work.
My only criticism is that your videos are really hard to watch, the water droplets on the camera are so annoying. A tip is to lick the lens and keep it submerged until you take off, you will find this helps to eliminate the droplets.

  2. I also surf similar size boards/volume to you and enjoy these reviews. I’m trying to decide between a 5’11 and 6’0 Omni. Does your 6’0 Omni fit in a barrel as well as a 6’0 Hypto even with the Omni’s added width and volume? Do you have to adjust your feet much while you ride the Omni with all the extra width forward? Also do you feel the 6’0 Omni’s nose sticks out or catches extra wind making it harder to paddle into waves on offshore days?

    1. I found 6’0 fitted in fine and had less catching issues then the hypto. It also slowed down and speed back up easier. It never had issues getting over the ledge on strong offshore days the Omni also felt more settled in those windy conditions compared to the hypto.

The hypto however turns a lot easier.
